Noted vibraphonist-composer Stefon Harris will perform in concert at 色界吧 on April 9 as the Music Department's 2007-08 Hume Visiting Artist. Heralded by the Los Angeles Times as "one of the most important young artists in jazz," his passionate artistry, energetic stage presence, and astonishing virtuosity have propelled him into the forefront of the current jazz scene. Lauded by his peers and jazz critics alike, Harris is committed to exploring the rich potential of jazz composition and blazing new trails on the vibraphone.
A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, Harris is a recipient of the prestigious Martin E. Segal Award from Lincoln Center and has earned three Grammy nominations. North Sea Jazz awarded him the prestigious International 2002 Bird Award for Artist Deserving Wider Recognition. He has also been voted Best Mallet Player by the Jazz Journalists Assn. (2003, 2002, 2001, and 2000); Debut Artist of the Year by Jazztimes ; Downbeat 鈥檚 Critics Poll winner for Vibraphone and Rising Star, Vibraphone (2003); Newsweek 鈥檚 Best Jazz CD; Best New Talent and 1999-2000 Readers Poll Best Vibraphonist by Jazziz Magazine ; and Chicago Tribune 鈥檚 Debut of the Year.
"Stefon Harris Presents African Tarantella鈥ances With Duke" will take place at Thorne Hall on the Occidental campus Wednesday, April 9 at 8 p.m. are $11.50 general admission, $6.50 for students and seniors, and free to Occidental community members with ID. A free one-hour performance workshop will be held in Occidental's Bird Studio on Tuesday, April 8 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
