The 16 photographs from Jack's recent at in West Hollywood, "Barack Obama: The Freshman," were taken when the president was a first-year student at Occidental. Snapped in the living room of Jack's off-campus apartment, less than a block from campus, the photographs show the 19-year-old coolly smoking cigarettes and wearing a Panama hat and leather bomber jacket.

"A friend of mine was telling me about this really handsome guy, and he walked into the campus coffee shop," Jack told the New York Times in June. A photo shoot followed, and the negatives sat untouched in a box until Jack unearthed them during last year's presidential campaign.

Jack, who in college dreamed of becoming a professional photographer, instead earned a doctorate in counseling psychology from USC and is now an assistant professor of psychology at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. A sample of some of her other photography from the period is featured in the fall issue of .
