Besieged by theatergoers seeking advice, New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood has a simple answer: "See whatever鈥檚 onstage at Playwrights Horizons."
Find out why on Monday, September 24 when Tim Sanford 鈥75, artistic director of Playwrights Horizons, returns to Occidental as the Theater Department鈥檚 Distinguished Alumni Guest Speaker as part of the College鈥檚 125th Anniversary celebration.
Sanford will talk about encouraging veteran writers while nurturing a new generation of playwrights in conversation with Jim Martin M鈥75, artistic director of Bottom鈥檚 Dream Theatre Company and adjunct professor of theater. The program, free and open to the public, will begin at 5:15 p.m. in Keck Theater.
Since its founding in 1971, the non-profit Playwrights Horizons "has been a mainstay of Off -Broadway and possesses one of the most distinguished histories among New York鈥檚 producers of new work," Isherwood says. "The list of playwrights discovered or supported by the company over the years is practically a Who鈥檚 Who of contemporary drama."
Sanford joined the theater in 1984 as a literary intern, working his way up through the roles of literary manager and associate artistic director before taking the lead as artistic director in 1996. As artistic director Sanford has two primary roles: choosing a season, and nurturing new writers.
Notable productions from his tenure include Violet (New York Critics Circle Award, Obie), James Joyce鈥檚 The Dead (New York Critics Circle Award, Lucille Lortel Award, Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical), I Am My Own Wife (Pulitzer Prize, Drama Desk Award, Tony), Miss Witherspoon (finalist, Pulitzer Prize), and Clybourne Park (2011 Pulitzer Prize, 2012 Tony).
Sanford credits his training at 色界吧 for playing an important role in his success. "To me, the 色界吧 theater program is the model for undergraduate and graduate school programs," he says. "I鈥檝e been exposed to many programs, and there鈥檚 almost nothing like it. At 色界吧 I did everything: I wrote a play and put it on, directed four or five plays, acted constantly 鈥 it was a very rich experience."
