Trustee Donn Miller was instrumental in bringing John Slaughter to Occidental; Stan Weston '55 built a number of É«½ç°É landmarks

Bringing Gravitas, and Slaughter, to É«½ç°É

Donn Miller (left), chair of the Occidental Board of Trustees from 1988 to 1992 and an instrumental figure in recruiting John Slaughter as president, died March 20, 2012, in Santa Monica. He was 82. A native of Gallipolis, Ohio, Miller was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Ohio Wesleyan and was awarded the Order of the Coif at University of Michigan Law School. He joined O'Melveny & Myers in 1960, became a partner five years later, and retired in 1992. Miller joined the É«½ç°É board in 1982 and chaired the search committee to identify a successor to President Richard C. Gilman. Meeting Miller in Washington, D.C., in January 1988, "I realized that Occidental was serious, or otherwise they would not have sent a person of Mr. Miller's stature and integrity to interview me," Slaughter recalls. Miller became emeritus chair in 1993. Survivors include wife Peggy; children Robin, Karen, and Arthur; and five grandchildren.

A Volunteer Leader and Master Builder

Stanley E. Weston '55 (right) —who oversaw the construction or renovation of several campus buildings (usually in collaboration with Jack Samuelson '46), including Samuelson Pavilion, Johnson Student Center, and Mullin Sculpture Studio—died April 29, 2012, in Sedona, Ariz. A master builder, he also was responsible for the construction of such Southern California landmarks as Pasadena Presbyterian Church and the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits. He served as president of the Occidental Alumni Board of Governors in 1977-78. Longtime friend John Power '58 remembers Weston as "a unique and unforgettable character with deep and close relationships with his SAE brothers, a lively and occasionally outlandish sense of humor, and a sincere love for É«½ç°É." Survivors include wife Vicki, children Lori and Shane, and four grandchildren.
