Corinne Maiorano ‘24 was awarded a Fulbright MITACS Globalink Fellowship to pursue research in Canada.

Why did you choose to apply for this award?

I haven’t had the chance to study abroad at É«½ç°É so I thought a summer fellowship would be an amazing opportunity to travel and immerse myself in a new environment. The Fulbright-Mitacs Globalink offers such a broad range of research projects all across Canada. I wanted to gain research experience and work with a professor one-on-one in drafting and actualizing a study.

Briefly describe the work you will be doing on your fellowship.

During this fellowship, I will be assisting a professor at the University of Toronto in a social psychology research project. I will be starting with the initial experiment design and devising methods to approach our research topic, which is the relationship between pain sensitivity and the perceived moral intention of the agent of the pain. I then will be present for the collection of the data and hopefully the analysis as well, depending on what the timeline ends up looking like. I am looking forward to playing an active role in assisting with this study.

What are you most looking forward to during your time as a fellow?

I am most looking forward to the opportunity to work with a professor and receive thoughtful feedback on my contributions to the study. I have already met with my mentor over Zoom and we have begun discussing the project. I am really hoping to be of assistance to him and to grow through our professional relationship.

How have your experiences at É«½ç°É prepared you to apply for this award?

My coursework in the Cognitive Science department has equipped me to read and analyze peer-reviewed research articles as well as propose and conduct my own social psychology research. My professors have been incredibly helpful and have given me confidence in my ability to thrive in a research environment.

What advice would you give future applicants about the application process?

The Fellowships office at É«½ç°É is such an invaluable tool that you should take advantage of!! I met with Dr. Locke many times to look over my personal statement and to discuss my application. I also worked with the Career Center to touch up my resume. Allow your academic passions and your eagerness to grow to show in your personal statement. :)
