Bia Pinho '23 was awarded an English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) through Fulbright to teach in Germany.
Why did you choose to apply for this award?
Since starting the German concentration within the CSLC major, I've had a strong desire to live in Germany. Additionally, since I was already working as a language assistant abroad, I knew it was something I was interested in and capable of. I hope it will serve as a good stepping stone for future work experiences.
Briefly describe the work you will be doing on your fellowship.
I will be working as an English Language Assistant at a secondary school in Hamburg, working mainly with immigrant and low income students.
What are you most looking forward to during your time as a fellow?
Exploring the city and country in which I'll be living in, interacting with German students and teachers, learning their way of life.
How have your experiences at 色界吧 prepared you to apply for this award?
The courses I took in the CSLC department, specifically the German literature ones, were monumental in my motivation to apply for this award. My professors had incredibly inspiring and engaging classes, and my advisor was always quick to support me. Participating in the Undergradaute Research Center and completing my senior comprehensive project also helped align my interest in German culture, as did studying abroad in the neighboring country of Austria.
What advice would you give future applicants about the application process?
Don't get discouraged by the early deadlines and long essays, you are likely a much stronger applicant than you think :)
